One of the things that makes this steamy part of the summer bearable to my family is the gift of beautiful, juicy, flavorful tomatoes! I hope you have access to them in your part of the world. When the summer tomatoes are in season, we showcase them many meals a week.
Tomato Sandwiches: Our Favorite Easy Summer Meal

We make tomato sandwiches all the time – Artisan bread, mayo, amazing sliced tomatoes, kosher salt and freshly ground pepper inspired by Dinner a Love Story (no bacon even needed- though here are my tips if you want a traditional BLT instruction).
When you have such a simple recipe, good ingredients are key:
- Use good bread (we have the good fortune of living in a city with Dozen Bakery, the most incredible bread source, which we use for our sandwiches)
- Good mayo (homemade or Duke’s mayonnaise are our favorites)
- Farm fresh, bright red tomatoes
- Coarse Salt. Freshly Ground Pepper.
Perfection!
Grilled Green Tomatoes: The Tangy, Juicy, Easy Summer Side

These Grilled Green Tomatoes are such a surprise! I love fried green tomatoes, but they can be tricky, messy and unpredictable. I learned about grilling green tomatoes a couple of years ago and they are very tangy, simple and clean. Sometimes we grill corn and green tomatoes, or green tomatoes and zucchini, or other things from our CSA.

Grilled Green Tomatoes
- Green (unripe) tomatoes, sliced into 1/2 inch slices
- a little olive oil
- coarse salt
- fresh ground black pepper
- a grill and grill spatula
Season sliced tomatoes with coarse salt and black pepper on both sides. Drizzle with a little olive oil. Set aside.
Preheat gas grill to high making sure the grates are cleaned and oiled. Grill the tomatoes 2-3 minutes per side until slightly charred but not too soft. Serve immediately!

(In these photos we served it with grilled corn and the most incredible summer cherry-peach-tomato-burrata salad I wrote about here.)
Take advantage of the tomato season- the sunny side of the sweltering hot summer days!
